Can someone tell me some good and inexpensive lights I can use for portraits?

Im on my way to buying my digital SLR, the Nikon D80 in fact
And im starting portraits but need lighting.

Any ideas? soft boxes, etc?

I need people to pose for me. All types of people. Im in central California and available on weekends.
